Respiratory Therapist

Respiratory Therapist

Duties and Responsibilities: Respiratory therapists care for patients who have trouble breathing—for example, from a chronic respiratory disease, such as asthma or emphysema. Their patients range from premature infants with undeveloped lungs to elderly patients who have diseased lungs. They also provide emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks, drowning, or shock.

Salary: An average Respiratory Therapist in the United States can expect to take home roughly $24.41 per hour. Pay ranges from $18.74 per hour on the low end to $32.83 on the high end.

Education: Respiratory therapists need at least an associates degree, but some positions may require more advanced schooling. Licensure is required in most states and obtaining one of two certifications is part of the licensing process. These medical professionals generally work with patients of different ages and treat individuals with conditions like asthma.

Demand for this particular career: The demand for respiratory therapists has never been higher, so job stability is excellent. Continued growth in bio medical technology ensures the field will never get boring. And the opportunity to really help people and make a lasting and meaningful difference in the lives of others means you’ll get much more out of your career than just a paycheck.
